Splattertron: a Commercial Failure
It’s been just over two months since the release of Splattertron’s latest EP, The Greatest Gift Is Love – a vague departure, what with the inclusion of a lucid pop track called “Penis”. The single received perhaps a handful of plays on Canadian university radio stations, although at least one timid DJ was concerned by station managers’ hypothetical reprimand over the song’s ‘naughty’ title, which brings to mind a interesting fact presented in Monty Python’s Big Red Book: “Did you know a penis can be used for peeing?”
To prime the pump, Splattertron made payola to Last FM (any one can do this) for one hundred plays, although it seems not to have made quite that. So the stats are as follows: about 600 MySpace visits, one CD Baby staff pick, one celebrity endorsement (by Nardwuar the Human Serviette) and inclusion in Last FM’s Freak Zone community (among the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, The Residents, The Boredoms, etc.). iTunes sales? Probably nothing. Reviews? Completely ignored. Revenue? If you want to help, please purchase a download. The budget was extremely low, and the whole thing was slapped together in less than a week – but it would be nice to break even. Lesson learned? Stick with your audience. Apologies to the regressive/ambient/noise/horror community for this pop digression. More crap to follow.
